10 Tips for Treating Tinnitus without Drugs

There’s no miracle cure for tinnitus, but there are treatment options that can help to prevent or reduce the constant ringing, buzzing, or whistling noises that can be the bane of your existence. Whether the cause of tinnitus is stress, hypertension, or noise-induced, physicians agree that you can improve your chances of becoming tinnitus-free by avoiding many common triggers. Listed are some popular techniques for treating tinnitus symptoms.

1- Meditate

Stress is one of the biggest tinnitus triggers, and difficult to control when you’re already feeling nervous, sad, and despairing because of relentless noises in your head that can last for days or years.

Still, learning to relax is a worthwhile achievement in treating tinnitus, so it pays to practice relaxation techniques such as meditation, positive affirmation, controlled breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation.

By learning to produce the “relaxation response,” you better your chances of quieting tinnitus.

2- Keep active.

When tinnitus seems unbearable, it helps to find an activity that keeps you busy for a while, something to distract your attention from tinnitus ringing sounds.

3- Exercise.

Exercise is a great way to keep your mind focused on sounds outside of tinnitus noises, while also reducing stress and improving circulation. Choose a physical activity that you like, and you’ll be able to stick to it long after tinnitus stops being a problem.

4- Make noise.

Many tinnitus sufferers make the mistake of chasing quietness, only to find that tinnitus ear ringing only gets louder in an environment devoid of street noise or chatter. To practice tinnitus retraining therapy, you need to commit yourself to several months of constant background music, either through a TRT device, headphones, or white noise machine- even while sleeping at night.

5- Seek therapy.

As a means of controlling stress and producing relaxation, many patients benefit greatly from hypnotherapy, acupuncture, or biofeedback in treating tinnitus.

6- Habituate.

Acceptance is key to managing tinnitus. It’s important to find peacefulness in the “now” while at the same time treating tinnitus for a better tomorrow.

7- Cut back on caffeine and salt.

Caffeine and sodium are two common dietary triggers that most often worsen tinnitus symptoms, making whooshing, pounding or hissing sounds in the ears louder and more frequent.

To reduce tinnitus, cut back on or cut out coffee, tea, chocolate, salt, and processed foods.

8- Stop smoking.

Smoking decreases the amount of oxygen that gets to your brain, thereby aggravating tinnitus.

9- Practice good sleep hygiene.

Getting enough sleep at night is a struggle that many tinnitus sufferers have. If tinnitus sounds wake you up in the middle of the night or make it difficult to get to sleep, then consider keeping some soft music in the background. Many manufacturers make soft sleep pillows with mp3 capacities to accommodate people with sleep disorders and tinnitus.

To ensure you get restorative sleep, avoid sleeping with a light on, and refrain from using electronic media in the late evening.

10- Nourish your body.

Sometimes, vitamin deficiency is a cause of tinnitus. B vitamins such as vitamin B12 have been linked in several scientific studies focusing on tinnitus treatment. Ginkgo biloba, a therapeutic plant species used for centuries to promote good health, has also attracted attention from the medical community for its usefulness in sustaining normal blood circulation. Many other vitamins, minerals, and herbs are helpful for supporting neurological functioning, an important factor in treating tinnitus.
